Stuart Ross, Vidal Sassoon Atelier Colourist Answers Important Hair-Dying Questions #PGMom

Are you enjoying the first glimpses of spring?  I am!  As a PGMom it’s extremely easy to get ready for Spring: cleaning, laundry, personal care, and personal grooming too!

Disclosure: I am a P&Gmom/mamanP&G. As part of my affiliation with this group I receive products and special access to P&G events and opportunities. The opinions on this blog are my own.

I was given the opportunity to experience Vidal Sassoon’s products, and was also given the chance to interview Stuart Ross, Vidal Sassoon Atelier Colourist:

  1. Can a permanent color be applied over a semi-permanent color? And also the reverse?

Yes, but the easiest tip is to follow the instructions carefully when coloring at home – you’ll get the best result by sticking to the guidance in the pack.

  1. Can I buy different color hair dyes and mix them?

The Vidal Sassoon Salonist™ has a specific technology where the roots and the lengths are treated separately to ensure both get the optimum color level needed for rich hair colour full of depth and tones. The formula is designed to get the optimum hair color results.

  1. Can I dye over my previous hair color using a supermarket box dye?

Yes, NEW Vidal Sassoon Salonist™ features an innovative 2-step technique. This smart, flexible color technology has been specifically created to give the perfect consistency for use with a brush and bowl, as done in salons – so women can achieve a precise application at the roots and the right balance of depth and tones on the lengths. Scientific insights into hair fibres, structures and surface properties provides customised formulas for the roots, and then for the lengths so that both areas of the hair receive the right amount of color.

  1. Can you mix hair colour one day but use it the next? If not, why not?

No, the products create a chemical reaction once mixed together to offer the best hair color results.

  1. Does it affect the dye job if my hair is clean?

It is best to apply colour to hair and scalp that has not been shampooed 24 hrs prior to the service,

Your scalp has natural oils that protect the skin during the colour process. In the case of the hair having build up of styling products, shampoo the hair the day before for best result

  1. How can I avoid my hair color fading so quickly?

In terms of maintaining your colour, water is the biggest factor in color fade, due the oxidative minerals in wash water that can cause free radicals and affect hair quality. Make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner designed to protect colored hair. Sun protection is also a big factor so don’t forget to protect your hair, VS Leave In Conditioner is a great way to do this. Heated styling can also play a part so try using a lower temperature when styling, and always use a heat protector product.

  1. How can I remove hair colour stains from my skin?

To avoid color staining the skin, the application of Vidal Sassoon Salonist™ is an innovative 2-step technique. This smart, flexible colour technology has been specifically created to give the perfect consistency for use with a brush and bowl, as done in salons. The ‘Rich Color Cream’ is designed with the right concentration of dye, specifically to be used on the roots so the product does not run on skin and the brush makes it easier to apply colour on the roots.

  1. I have dark brown hair and I want a caramel brown. [I’d like blonde but we both know that the upkeep of that is absolutely insane]  How is that made possible?

Whether you are dyeing your hair darker or lighter, you should only lift two levels lighter or go down two levels darker. If you’re going lighter, a cool or ashy tone will counteract brassiness, which is an unwanted side effect of the lightening process. Since you are adding pigment when you go darker, hair can appear thicker and glossier. Lightening hair can have a similar effect but is caused by the texture of the hair shaft changing rather than the cuticle filling up.

9.         What hair colour would match an olive skin tone?

It’s not necessarily that simple, it’s really about a confidence and an attitude – if you have these you can pretty much carry anything off. But the usual rules apply obviously. If you have cool skin, then try for a little warmth in your hair color, if you have warmth in your skin try for a cooler tone in your hair. If you’re blond and have warm skin, lean towards cooler ash shades. As a rule, warmth and warmth or cool and cool don’t mix.
