Celebrate Canada’s 150th and #Giveaway #ChurchAndDwight #ad CAN 03/07

This giveaway has ended.

I’m sure you’re all familiar with that little orange box in your fridge, freezer or baking cupboard. Arm & Hammer™ Baking Soda has been helping generations of Canadian families cook and clean for decades.

Disclosure: I have been compensated to share this post. The opinions on this blog are my own.

Over the years, the team at Arm & Hammer – with the help of their loyal fans – have come up with more than 100 uses for baking soda and I’m sharing some of my favourites here.

  • Baby, baby, baby. Baking soda is an all-natural cleaning product that’s gentle enough for even the tiniest baby clothes, yet effective enough for big baby odours. It can be used to treat spills on carpets, clean equipment and toys, deodorize baby bottles and diaper pails as well as freshen stuffed animals to give them a new life.
  • Have you tried it in the bathroom? It helps remove the dirt and grime from bathroom tiles or no-wax floors quickly and easily. It’s also effective at cleaning shower curtains, deodorizing drains and wastebaskets, surface-safe cleaning and for septic system care.
  • Not just for cooking in the kitchen. Yes, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is a staple baking ingredient as it causes dough or batter to rise, becoming light and porous when heated, but it can also be used in the kitchen to clean lunch boxes, microwave ovens, dishes, pots and pans, recyclables, drains and garbage disposals. Did I mention it removes odours from plastic containers, polishes silver, freshens sponges and stinky sinks, refreshes tea pots, cups and mugs and works great as a fruit and vegetable scrub? It’s also a common deodorizer for fridges and freezers. Changing the box regularly (every 30 days is recommended) helps ensure optimal odour elimination.
  • Don’t fret about your floors. It helps remove unsightly scuff marks without unwanted scratch marks from tile and no-wax floors. It’s also great at neutralizing common household odours and freshens stale-smelling air in your home.
  • Tackles the greasiest of garages. Arm & HammerBaking Soda safely cleans your car lights, chrome, windows, tires, vinyl seats and floor mats without you having to worry about unwanted scratch marks. It’s also a great deodorizer for car interiors and camper water tanks and tackles oil and grease stains on your garage floor or driveway.
  • Smelly gear no more. Use Arm & Hammer baking soda to clean and deodorize smelly sports equipment like hockey or camping gear, as well as gym bags.
  • Don’t forget to take it outside. It is a must-have for your next camping trip! It’s a dish and pot scrubber, hand cleanser and deodorant, just to name a few. It also cleans your plastic and vinyl pool toys as well as lawn furniture when it’s time to bring them out for the summer and works wonders on barbecue grills.

And that’s not all!

Because of the gentle and all natural formula of Arm & Hammer™ Baking Soda, it’s a popular personal hygiene product for many. It can be used as a body and facial scrub, hand cleanser and a refreshing bath soak. It also helps to fight bad breath and body odour and is great for washing hair.img_0452For a full list of these 100 uses of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and usage instructions, visit www.armandhammer.ca. Open Up About Women’s Health and #Giveaway CAN 21/07 #pHBalancingAct #ad

THIS GIVEAWAY HAS ENDED

It’s pertinent that we educate ourselves and raise awareness on the importance of pH, so let’s empower women to open up about vaginal health and seek out proper prevention and treatment options.

Disclosure: I have been compensated to share this post. The opinions on this blog are my own.

It is very common for women to not discuss such sensitive topics as their feminine health/vaginal health with others, or at least not feel comfortable enough to do so within their close circles … not even with their doctors!  While I was growing up, this was definitely very true for me.  Funny enough, it was only after childbirth that I became less concerned with my embarrassment and more concerned with my health.

Unfortunately, the reality is it’s common for women to experience a variety of vaginal health issues, for instance, vaginal dryness post or reoccurring and bothersome yeast infections; sadly, it’s also common for most to not be educated about the elements that can affect feminine health. This lack of knowledge of the symptoms can lead to confusion on what to do to treat any symptoms, what products are available to them over the counter, and whether or not to see their physician.  When in doubt, it’s always best to get a proper diagnosis.

To empower themselves, women need to increase their knowledge about their feminine health:

– learn how to maintain proper pH

– understand your vaginal ecosystem and personal pH level

– understand how menopause may impact your vaginal health

– learn preventative and treatment measures for any personal vaginal health issues

We know that women often look to the internet for answers to their most intimate health questions because we’re often too embarrassed to ask our friends, loved ones, and in some cases, doctors.  The truth is that common issues like yeast infections affect most women at some point during their lives. In fact, about 5% of women suffer from recurrent yeast infections (more than 4 infections in the last year, or at least 3 infections in the last year that are unrelated to antibiotic use)[1] so it’s time we stop being ashamed and start talking about it.

Vaginal dryness during perimenopause and menopause is another issue that we really need to start talking about. Given that the average life expectancy for a Canadian woman is 84 years[2], most can expect to live over one-third of their lives in a menopausal state.  All woman experience menopause symptoms differently, though almost half (47 per cent) experience vaginal dryness.  One-third of women are too embarrassed to talk about vaginal dryness and; therefore, leave their symptoms untreated. We need to educate women about menopausal misconceptions as well!  Vaginal dryness is not a normal part of aging, and intimacy doesn’t have to be a challenge.

Are you noticing a pattern here?  Women are embarrassed to discuss intimate health concerns … and they shouldn’t be!

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing, one of Canada’s most trusted physicians, Dr. Marla Shapiro. We discussed women’s health issues and solutions; such as, Replens and RepHresh.  RepHresh products help women treat yeast infections and vaginal odour and itching; Replens helps treat vaginal dryness.  By discussing vaginal health and promoting healthy habits “down there”, it’s hopeful that we’ll be able to break through the barrier and make a positive change.
Check out my interview With Dr. Marla Shapiro:

1) Can you provide me with 3 symptoms that women absolutely need to tell their doctors about?

A1) The top three symptoms that women notice and are not sure if  it’s a concern, or if it’s normal, are:  odour, discharge, and itch.

2) I’ve read that “Lower estrogen levels affect the vagina’s acid-alkaline balance, which can spur inflammation—along with thinning and drying of the vaginal walls, which can cause itching, burning, and redness. Regular sex can prevent this atrophy.” [womenshealthmag.com November 2014]
Is this true? What other ways can we prevent this atrophy?

A2) That is specifically focusing on a certain age group (menopause), when permanent changes occur, the pH becomes more alkaline, and there’s an estrogen deficit and it won’t restore.  Yes, regular sex can can be preventative.

But, for younger women (and all ages), pH varies.  It doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a disease.  There’s a variation on each woman’s normal and that can lead to infection(s).  There’s a narrow range of a balanced pH of 3.5 to 4.5 and variations can incur change within the ‘natural range’.

What is the role of pH?

Think of the vagina as an ecosystem.  There’s healthy bacteria and there’s yeast, and a balance of the two is ‘normal’.  Any influence or change in that balance can cause a change in discharge and odour.

The use of product locally (like a gel) will help pH become balanced again.

3) Why do women experience vaginal odours?

A3) Vaginal odours can be normal or a sign of infection.

[29% of the time it’s due to yeast (yeast infection)]

[50% of the time it’s bacterial (bacterial vaginosis)]

[The rest of the time it’s just a variation from the normal pH range of 3.5 to 4.5]

4) Growing up I experienced many yeast infections. Now as an adult (an older adult) I can’t remember the last time I had one. Why? What caused it to disappear? I’m not complaining, just curious.

A4) Some factors are:  diet, hormones, sexual activity, and hormones (they change over time.)

5) Is it normal to have discharge?

A5)  yes, quite normal

You can learn more here: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/health/a34156/vaginal-discharge-causes-treatment/

6) Do vaginas get older? Do they age, as we age? In which way(s)?

A6)  Yes, they do.  There are fluctuations in pH, and estrogen depletion

7) On a personal note, should I be doing Kegel exercises? Last year I had to remove massive tumours that were on my ovaries…I had a complete hysterectomy.

A7) Kegel exercises are for bladder and pelvic health so; overall, it is a good to do kegels but I suggest factoring in your personal health concerns.

8) I grew up learning not to use any products on/in your vagina … unless you had to fight off an infection. I’ll assume because it might stop you from being balanced and even cause infections. Today, why is there a push towards using these products? Is our ph level really a factor? How do we know where our pH level is at?

A8) It’s not that there’s a push.  There is a raised level of awareness or knowledge.  The pH is a factor when it’s not balanced.  See your physician to get your pH level.
