“So Let it be Written. So Let it be Done.” #TheTenCommandments

My movie review of Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956, ‘The Ten Commandments’ will prove to be more difficult than I had ever expected.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this film for review. The opinions of this blog are my own. I’m not a professional in any way but I am a movie fan.

The 1956 feature film ‘The Ten Commandments’ was, is and always will be my absolute favourite classic movie of all time.  There is no better actor, in my opinion, than Charlton Heston to take on the role of Moses!Debuting March 10, 2020, the Special Collector’s Edition includes both the 1923 and 1956 films, plus a 16-page booklet with rare photos and background about both movies … perfect for Easter gift-giving.  The beloved masterpiece is presented in a new Blu-ray Digibook from Paramount Home Entertainment. This spectacular release features three Blu-ray Discs™ and includes not only the fully restored 1956 version of the film, but also DeMille’s original 1923 silent version, as well as a 16-page booklet featuring rare photos and historical facts about both productions. The set also includes an in-depth, 73-minute documentary entitled “The Ten Commandments: Making Miracles,” commentary on the 1956 film by Katherine Orrison, author of “Written in Stone: Making Cecil B. DeMille’s Epic, The Ten Commandments,” newsreel footage of the film’s New York premiere, theatrical trailers, hand-tinted footage of the Exodus and Parting of the Red Sea sequence from the 1923 version, a two-colour Technicolor segment, and photo galleries.

DeMille’s last motion picture made Charlton Heston a superstar and remains a cinematic triumph and perennial fan-favourite. Filmed in Egypt and the Sinai with one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a motion picture, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS tells the story of the life of Moses (Heston). Once favoured in the Pharaoh’s (Yul Brynner) household, Moses turned his back on a privileged life to lead his people to freedom. The cast of the 1956 feature film was fantastic! Quite frankly, I can not envision any other actors to do the same as the 1956 cast.  This is not to say that the 1923 film isn’t good; au contraire! The 1923 version was fine but I personally prefer the 1956 one. In fact many scenes were kept the same or similar for the 1956 version.

The 1956 Cast:  Charlton Heston (Moses), Yul Brynner (Pharaoh Ramses), Anne Baxter (Nefretiri), Yvonne De Carlo (Sephora), John Derik (Joshua), Debra Paget (Lilia), Edward G. Robinson (Dathan), Vincent Price (Baka)

In my opinion ‘The Ten Commandments’ 1956 film should be seen at least once in your lifetime; good classic movies should be seen at least once! The Ten Commandments isn’t just ‘good’ … it’s fantastic!  It’s confusing to me, to understand why some people think that this movie has scenes that are inappropriate for young children; however, I am not of that opinion.  I was a child when I first saw it, and I saw it throughout my entire childhood; most of my friends did too.  We weren’t horrified, frightened, or shocked so badly that it stunted our growth.  As a parent, I did want to protect my daughter but not to the point where it would have made her ignorant. Having said this, all parents have the right to raise their children how they see fit.  As for me, I am happy to have been raised as I was … this helped influence me in making the decisions I made while raising my daughter. If you haven’t seen ‘The Ten Commandments’ and choose to take my advise, please do enjoy it.  It won’t have current-day special effects so keep this fact in mind. In spite of this, it has stood the test of time and is a classic film for a reason.  Should you choose not to see the film, or have already watched it, I ask you to reconsider. While this film is a glamorized Hollywood version of the biblical story of Moses, it was done wonderfully.

Please leave me a comment. Share your thoughts. Let me know if you’ve seen this film, and if you did what you thought of it.An After Thought:  Of course no one could foresee the current state of affairs!  The COVID-19 global pandemic has made it both interesting and difficult when it comes to shopping; however, although challenging you can still purchase goods and then have those goods shipped to your home. If you act quickly you might even get it in time for Easter.

Celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Beverly Hills Cop #BeverlyHillsCop

If you’re like me, you have fond memories of the 70s and 80s.

It’s amusing how life is. When I was in high school, in the 80s, all I could think about was how much I wanted my future adult life to begin, and how much everything would be better in the future. While some of that was true (maybe all of it), I can honestly say that it wasn’t as bad as I was convinced it was!

The 80s were a different time. Back then we didn’t have the technology that we have today, and watching movies was a totally different experience. We might chuckle at some poorly executed effects in many of the 1980’s movies, perhaps laugh out loud at the 80s fashion, and even be confused at some storylines.

What I am certain of is:

  1. it’s lovely to revisit some of my 1980’s memories – like rewatching forgotten movies and
  2. it’s wonderful to be able to share it with my daughter
  3. it’s pretty cool to share it with you too!

Recently I sat down to a movie marathon with my daughter; we watched the action-comedy classic Beverly Hills 3 Movie Collection (in Blue-Ray, with bonus features). This newly remastered 3 movie collection contains originally released special features like commentary by director Martin Brest, a glimpse inside the casting process, the music of Beverly Hills Cop, location map, Theatrical trailer, and Beverly Hills Cop – The Phenomenon Begins.

Did You Know that BEVERLY HILLS COP films earned a combined $735M+ worldwide, as well as two Academy Award nominations* and a Grammy Award for the first film’s Original Score?  Yes they did!

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the BEVERLY HILLS COP follows the one-and-only Axel Foley, a street-smart cop from Detroit. Tracking down his best friend’s killer in Beverly Hills, Axel smashes through the local barriers in a hilarious, high-speed pursuit of justice.
The BEVERLY HILLS COP Blu-ray boasts new special features, including:
  • Two never-before-seen deleted scenes
  • Four new behind-the-scenes featurettes incorporating vintage 1984 interviews
  • An isolated audio track of the original score by Harold Faltermeyer
  • “BHC Mixtape ‘84”, which allows viewers to go directly to the scenes featuring the hit songs “The Heat Is On,” “Neutron Dance,” “New Attitude,” “Stir It Up,” “Do You Really,” and “Nasty Girl.”
In BEVERLY HILLS COP II Eddie Murphy returns as Axel goes deep undercover to investigate a gang of international munitions smugglers and in BEVERLY HILLS COP III Axel investigates a counterfeit money ring, run out of a theme park in Los Angeles.
As I was about to write my post, I had every intention to jump right in and discuss the movies.  I thought to myself, “who hasn’t seen Beverly Hills Cop?” but I was quickly reminded that my daughter, and probably many of her generation, hadn’t seen it!
The gist of this is there’s a reason we celebrate things. In this case, we’re celebrating 35 years since Beverly Hills Cop. Eddie Murphy IS Axel Foley in every sense! Movie quality may have gotten better, special effects may have improved, and fashion may have changed.  What won’t change is Eddie Murphy’s distinct voice, his humour, and “Axel’s” perfect laugh!

Take All the Action Home #GeminiMan

Now on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, & Digital and ready for you to take home and enjoy!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this film for review. The opinions of this blog are my own. I’m not a professional in any way but I am a movie fan.

Let’s start off by pointing out that (in my opinion) Will Smith has evolved over the years as an actor to become the A-list-type that he is today.  It’s easy to see how he has become an actor that excels in not only comedy, but also drama and action. Having grown up with the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, it’s difficult to forget those old days! Overall, I think we all approve!

GEMINI MAN starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong. Directed by Ang Lee.

Will Smith stars as retired hitman Henry Brogan, forced on the run by a young, highly skilled operative who will stop at nothing to eliminate his target. Now on a race around the globe, Henry must outsmart the mysterious assassin at every step – but how far will he go once they finally come face to face? Packed with epic fight scenes and groundbreaking visual effects, GEMINI MAN is the future of action movies.

U.S. Rating:               PG-13, violence and action throughout, and brief strong language
Canadian Rating:       PG, violence, coarse language

It goes without saying, with Will Smith starring in this film it’s going to be amazing! In the very least, Will Smith will give a great performance. Without giving away anything about the movie I can say that; once again, Will does not disappoint.

The frame rate, hyper stylizing in this case, for some may not be preferred; however, I don’t mind it at all, and I just accept it as how the movie is intended to be seen. I feel like it adds a sharpness to the film and it amplifies the entire experience.

The 4K Ultra HD disc and 4K Ultra HD Digital releases present the film in Dolby Vision®, which brings entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality with spectacular colors, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. GEMINI MAN is the first ever Dolby Vision high frame rate disc to be released. The film also boasts a Dolby Atmos® soundtrack remixed specifically for the home to place audio anywhere in the room, including overhead.

[In addition, both the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Packs include access to a Digital copy of the film.]

This film is unlike anything you’ve seen before.  Will Smith plays two roles of a character at two different ages (with the use of de-aging technology). While the plot is a little dull, and the dialogue a little tired, I can say that I really enjoyed seeing the interaction between old Will Smith vs. young Will Smith because; to me, the concept is mind-blowing. While the graphics didn’t allow for a seamless journey, it did allow for an unique, vividly thrilling experience.

GEMINI MAN is an action-packed movie that you just have to see!
