Roman Holiday {Gregory Peck & Audrey Hepburn} is the movie that propelled Audrey deep into her career. This was her first starring role; after all. Gregory, of course, was the perfect co-star as he would help Audrey to shine. Audrey plays a royal who secretly escapes her royal life; temporarily, in post-war Rome. She experiences joy, friendship, love, happiness and everything else that a regular life has to offer! This wonderful 1953 film was shot on-site: throughout the city of Rome and it includes all the iconic tourist-visited historical sites!

Disclosure:  I received a complimentary copy of this film for review. The opinions of this blog are my own. I’m not a professional in any way but I am a movie fan.

This classic ROMAN HOLIDAY debuted on Blu-ray for the first time ever on
September 15, 2020 from Paramount Home Entertainment. I will admit that I was very excited to watch Roman Holiday because I have so many wonderful memories of watching it every year during my Christmas Break as a child. Over the years, the film would appear to suffer some damage. Wear and tear would damage the actual film over time … this would be why a restoration would become so necessary!

The film had to be pieced back together, but since it was so badly damaged an extensive amount of tape had to be used to allow the negative to make it through a printing machine. However, due to the fragile state of the negative, a Dupe Negative was made and then blown up a few thousandths of an inch to cover all the splice tape that held the original negative together. Newly remastered from a 4K film transfer, the ROMAN HOLIDAY Blu-ray also includes a new Filmmaker Focus with film historian Leonard Maltin, access to a Digital copy of the film, as well as previously released featurettes on Academy Award®-winner Audrey Hepburn, Edith Head’s Oscar®- winning* costumes, the blacklisting of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and much more.

Bonus Features:
Filmmaker Focus: Leonard Maltin on Roman Holiday
Behind the Gates: Costumes
Rome with a Princess
Audrey Hepburn: The Paramount Years
Dalton Trumbo: From A-List to Blacklist
Paramount in the ’50s: Remembering Audrey
Theatrical Trailers
Four Photo Galleries: Production, The Movie, Publicity, The Premiere

Ranked as the #4 greatest love story of all time by the American Film Institute, ROMAN HOLIDAY earned 10 Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Actress for Hepburn, Best Costume Design for legendary designer Edith Head, and Best Writing for Dalton Trumbo.

In my opinion, this digitally remastered film was brilliantly done. As an Audrey Hepburn fan, I am thrilled to now own this feature film. How can anyone not have seen Roman Holiday yet I don’t really know; however if you haven’t, it truly is a film not to be missed!

  1. Had no idea Audrey won an Oscar for this – and for her first role! She is brilliant in this, the camera loves her. But Eddie Albert almost steals the show as the long suffering photographer.
Perhaps the origins of the RomCom genre?
    Love this film.
