The temperatures are beginning to drop and that can only mean one thing – fall is
around the corner! After a fun-filled summer, families will be settling into a new routine, but don’t forget to designate time to stay connected and bond as a family between school, work and extracurricular activities.
Fall is the perfect time to start new family traditions for years to come. Gather round this season to pop some corn, cozy up on the couch under a blanket and screen your family’s favourite movies on Netflix. To make the season extra special, Netflix sent along a Fall Family Fun bundle to take care of all our snacking needs! This was totally unexpected and very much welcome! You can get your kids excited while making family viewing more fun any-time by incorporating the following activities:
- Set up a popcorn bar with crowd-pleasing candy toppings – M&M’s, Swedish Berries and pretzels are our favourite additions!
- Turn your kids into movie critics by encouraging critical thinking and verbal expression. After the credits roll, ask questions about the movie and let them tell their own story – be sure to capture their great responses for your post!
- Get movin’ and dance! After sitting and lounging through your family’s favourite picks, take some time to turn up the soundtrack at the end of the show, jump off the couch with your kids and bust a move!
With a great new line-up of titles hitting the service this month, this is a list of must-see family classics (for example):
LILO & STITCH, NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS, THE MUPPETS, SHARK TALE, MEET THE ROBINSONS, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB, FREAKY FRIDAY, HOMEWARD BOUND, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, THE LIZZIE MCGUIRE MOVIE, THE ARISTOCATS, and THE RESCUERS. One of our favourites is FREAKY FRIDAY; my daughter and I must have watched this movie 50 times over the past several years. My daughter was 5 years old when this movie came out but she started enjoying it when she was about 9 or 10 years old. She’s watched and re-watched it ever since. In order to welcome Fall, and to re-visit one of our beloved movies, we sat down to a family movie night. We decided to enjoy Freaky Friday yet again! We set up our popcorn bar (provided by Netflix) and enjoyed this feel-good movie. This mom/daughter time is very important to me, and I’m hoping it’s just as important to my daughter (whether she chooses to admit it to me or not). Since this is my daughter’s last year in High School, I’m hoping to maintain this family movie night routine throughout the school year. Our movie night can be flexible; we just have to ensure that it happens.
I can’t get enough of Freaky Friday either!
